The influence of Roman law on the formation of Ukrainian statehood in the IX-XV centuries

Abstract

Currently, there is a significant number of works of scientists with the aim of investigating and ordering the chronology of events related to the development and stages of the formation of statehood on the territory of modern Ukraine. Each of the stages is described and thoroughly studied in many works of scientists, both modern and past times. Individual primary sources of ancient legal monuments that have come down to us testify to a long process of formation and establishment of Ukrainian statehood. The past and the present are intertwined in the age-old traditions of nationalities and their customs, moral norms, behavior, everyday life and perception of the world. Our research has shown that a significant influence on the formation of statehood and legal relations in the early stages of the development of Kiev Rus was exerted by Byzantine canon law, which was reflected in the norms of the then customary law, and later implemented into the laws of Russian Pravda, which incorporated the achievements of Roman lawyers. Such processes had a significant impact on the formation of the Galicia-Volyn state. Through the centuries, they were reflected in the customary law of the Cossack Ukraine. Due to the constant scientific interest in the study of the heritage of the Ukrainian state, the study of the genesis of the state of Ukraine, the influence of Roman law on the development of ancient and more modern acts of legal monuments, which had historical significance for the formation of Ukrainian statehood in the IX-XV centuries, is of particular importance.
