Compliance with the principles and recommendations of COPE, WAME, DORA

  1. General Provisions

The editorial policy of the scholarly journal “Bulletin of the Penitentiary Association of Ukraine”is based on internationally recognized standards of publication ethics, transparency, and quality of scientific research.

The journal ensures that its editorial processes comply with the recommendations of leading international organizations, including:

  • Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE);
  • World Association of Medical Editors (WAME);
  • San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA);
  • International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

These standards are applied at all stages of the editorial and publishing process: from manuscript submission to publication and post-publication handling.

 

  1. Adherence to COPE Principles

The journal follows the core COPE principles:

  • Transparency of editorial processes — clearly defined procedures for submission, peer review, and publication;
  • Independence and impartiality — editorial decisions are based solely on the scientific merit of submissions;
  • Academic integrity — prevention of plagiarism, data falsification, and duplicate publication;
  • Appropriate authorship — recognition of each author’s contribution in accordance with international criteria;
  • Handling of complaints and appeals — transparent procedures for addressing ethical concerns;
  • Corrections and retractions — implementation of corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern where necessary.

 

  1. Implementation of WAME Recommendations

The journal applies the following approaches:

  • Editorial independence — absence of influence from founders, sponsors, or other interested parties;
  • Conflict of interest disclosure — mandatory for authors, reviewers, and editors;
  • High-quality peer review — ensuring objective, timely, and professional expert evaluation;
  • Funding transparency — disclosure of sources of research funding;
  • Support for scientific development — promotion of publication activity, including that of early-career researchers.

The journal supports research assessment approaches in line with DORA:

  • FAIR Data Principles, whereby data should be:
    • Findable;
    • Accessible;
    • Interoperable;
    • Reusable;
  • support for open access policies, including Plan S;
  • encouragement of authors to publish research data.

 

  1. Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence

When using artificial intelligence technologies, authors are required to:

  • ensure transparency in their application;
  • avoid violations of authorship and academic integrity;
  • guarantee the reliability of obtained results.

Artificial intelligence cannot be listed as an author of a scholarly article.

 

  1. Responsibilities of the Parties
  • Authors — responsible for the originality and reliability of the research;
  • Reviewers — responsible for the objectivity of expert evaluation;
  • Editorial Office — responsible for compliance with ethical standards and transparency of procedures.
